Programs That Prepare You to Lead and Serve
The Department of Political Science helps students become responsible citizens, community leaders and successful professionals in the public, nonprofit and private sectors. Our programs blend classroom learning with hands-on experiences that help you build real-world skills and prepare for meaningful careers in your community and beyond.
Offerings include:
- In-person and online majors in Criminology & Criminal Justice: Programs that combine theory and practice to prepare students to work in the criminal justice system and associated organizations.
- Majors in Political Science, Public Administration and Political Communication: Programs that equip students for lives of active citizenship and professional and personal fulfillment through studying politics and its applications.
- Graduate Programs: Two fully online degrees — the Master of Public Policy (MPP) and the M.A. in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Development — that enhance the careers of public service and nonprofit professionals.
Students are also encouraged to explore our minors, certificates and Pre-Law program to further develop skills and prepare for a range of professional paths.
Mission
The Department of Political Science at the University of Northern Iowa promotes systematic analyses of local, national and international political processes by disseminating knowledge, equipping students with critical thinking and analytical skills, and contributing scholarly research and publication to the discipline.

Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program was recently accredited by the NASPAA Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation and listed on the Annual Voter of Accredited Programs in conformity with NASPAA standards
