Judy K. Nissen Endowed Fellowship

The Judy K. Nissen Endowed Fellowship provides support for one or more faculty members in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences each academic year, allowing them to pursue their scholarly interests while engaging students in their work.

Nissen Fellows may use the fellowship stipend to support professional development, scholarly activity and research, enhance curriculum innovation; contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning; and develop community outreach initiatives.

One fellowship will be awarded for the 2026-27 academic year.

Eligibility

Tenured faculty holding a full-time (9 month) appointment at the time of application and during the Endowed Fellowship period. Faculty must let five academic years elapse between Nissen Endowed Fellowship awards.

Faculty Compensation

The Judy K. Nissen Endowed Fellowship provides a $10,000 stipend that can be utilized in a variety of ways to support the proposed project. Funds must be spent within the award’s fiscal year, and the expenses must meet UNI policies and guidelines.

Proposal Guidelines

  1. Application Cover Sheet, including an abstract and signatures.

  2. Significance and Objectives
    What is the overall nature of the project? Specifically, what do you wish to accomplish? How does this project contribute to the scholarly discipline, your past research activity, and your career goals? Demonstrate how the project benefits the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the University.   

  3. Methods and Timetable
    How will you accomplish the established objectives? What means will be used to evaluate completion of the objectives? Draw up a timetable that estimates your schedule during the award period.

  4. Proposed Budget
    Provide an estimate of the costs you may incur during the award period. If you intend to use a course buyout for an adjunct, list the salary and fringe benefits that would be required. Include projected expenses for equipment, student workers, or travel. A portion may also be used for summer compensation.

  5. Literature Review
    How does your project fit within the established scholarly literature? 

  6. Dissemination and Long-Range Importance
    Describe specific plans for sharing the results of your research through scholarly presentations and/or publication. How will you build upon the results of your Nissen Endowed Fellowship work?
