MSW International Admissions

Hello! We are so excited that you are considering UNI for your MSW degree. We want to support you to make your time at UNI as smooth as possible, from your initial application to your degree completion.

On this page, you’ll find information specific to international students seeking to attend our MSW program.

First and foremost, we first want to connect you with our Office of International Admissions.  Helping international students prepare to attend UNI is their entire job.

You can find additional information about program application requirements and deadlines elsewhere on our website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attend the MSW program in-person?

  • We have two program options for our MSW program, which determines whether there is an in-person option available.  Which program you qualify for is dependent on your previous undergraduate degree.
  • To qualify for the Advanced Standing program (which is our only on-campus program option), you must have an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program or CSWE approval of your international degree.  CSWE offers international degree audits for international students hoping to qualify for an Advanced Standing program in the United States.
  • If you do not meet the social work undergraduate degree requirements, you are eligible for our Foundation MSW program only, which is currently only available online.

Is the MSW program full-time?

  • Our Advanced Standing programs (both in-person and fully online options) are full-time programs with the option to complete the program part-time.
  • Our Foundation program is part-time only.

Do I qualify for Advanced Standing?

  • To qualify for the Advanced Standing program (which is our only on-campus program), you must have an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program or CSWE approval of your international degree.
  • CSWE offers international degree audits for international students hoping to qualify for an Advanced Standing program in the United States.
  • We recommend completing the CSWE international degree audit as early as possible in your application process, to be able to submit your approval along with your MSW application materials.

Is financial aid available?

  • Yes! Our international MSW students are highly encouraged to apply for both tuition scholarships and graduate assistantships to help fund their degree program.

What support is available for international students on campus?

  • UNI has a vibrant campus life scene, which we highly encourage our international students participate in.
  • Our Office of International Engagement provides support to international students on-campus, through a range of activities and services.
  • Our previous international students have been active in a wide variety of activities and events, such as campus clubs/organizations (may we suggest the Student Social Work Association?), student athletics, local volunteering work, faculty research projects, and campus events.
