Placements Outside of Iowa
UNI students have interned at agencies and organizations across the country. These internships include congressional offices, the FBI, the US Marshals Service, the Treasury Department, the Department of Labor and the Department of Agriculture. Think tanks, lobbying firms, consulting firms and media outlets also offer internships.
Preparing for an Out-of-State Internship
UNI does not provide housing or transportation for students who travel out of state for internships; however, grant money is sometimes available to help defray costs. Consult the internship advisor about availability. Additionally, UNI has resources to help students find housing.
Students considering an out-of-state internship should give themselves plenty of time to prepare. Finding housing takes time. Moving across the country, even if it is temporary, is a massive undertaking. Additionally, if the internship is during the school year, students should make sure they are prepared to either not take classes that semester or arrange online classes or similar options.
Remote Internships
A handful of internship opportunities are available online, allowing students to work remotely while living at home. These internships often involve community organizing, especially on youth-related issues. A few suggestions are listed here.
