Gerontology Tracks

Don't get lost in the shuffle. With UNI's gerontology program, you'll receive individualized advising and our faculty will know you personally. Most classes in the major and minor have under 50 students.

We offer two tracks within the Gerontology major:

Long Term Care Administration

The Long Term Care Administration track is for students who plan to become licensed long term care administrators. It requires 10 credits hours in business, 14 credit hours in health care administration, and 9 credit hours in gerontology. This exceeds the state of Iowa's requirements for long term care administrators. After completing an extensive internship (720 contact hours), graduates sit for the boards to obtain state licensure.

Social Sciences

The Social Sciences track qualifies students to work in a variety of settings. It does not require business classes. Graduates in Gerontology: Social Sciences have diverse careers with both active and frail older adults in corporate, government, and non-profit agency environments. Social science track majors must complete an internship of 250 contact hours.

‌Required Coursework

The Gerontology major requires a minimum of 120 total hours to graduate. This total includes Liberal Arts Core requirements and the following specified major requirements, plus electives to complete the minimum of 120 hours. Liberal Arts Core courses included in major program requirements are distinguished by italics.

It is suggested students take PSYCH 1001, SW 1041 and SOC 1000 as their Social Sciences area Liberal Arts Core, as these are prerequisites for several of the required courses in this major.

This interdisciplinary program is offered jointly by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, and the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. It is administered through the School of Applied Human Sciences and under the supervision of the Gerontology Advisory Committee.
