Scholarships

The following is a listing of scholarships available to students in the Department of Family, Aging and Counseling. For more information about these scholarships, contact the department in 235 Latham at (319) 273-2814 or the Financial Aid Office in 105 Gilchrist at (319) 273-2700. Be aware that accepting academic scholarships may impact financial aid status and students with questions regarding this issue should consult the Financial Aid Office.

Robert L. Frank Scholarship - Counseling Scholarship

Both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling students are eligible.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Completion of at least one full-time semester of coursework in the counseling program (9 credits)
  • Financial need (FASFA forms completed)
  • Academic performance in previous graduate work (minimum 3.25 GPA)

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Two letters of recommendation (from professionals excluding UNI counseling faculty) which address the applicant's counseling performance and/or potential, as well as her/his leadership qualifications
  • A brief statement of how graduate study will contribute to your professional goals
  • A statement documenting the degree of need for financial assistance (including financial aid already secured)

Norene A. Smith - School Counseling Scholarship

School Counseling students only are eligible. 

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Submit a well written essay on how you have made a difference in children's lives (two pages single spaced)
  • Include two letters of support (not from departmental faculty) that verify how you have made a difference in children's lives
  • Submit a copy of your transcript verifying that you have completed at least one semester in the program (9 credits)
  • Financial need (FASFA forms completed)

Nellie Dickey Scholarship
  • Declared undergraduate major in Department of Family, Aging & Counseling at UNI
  • Total cumulative GPA of 3.25

Must be junior standing (60 hours) at the end of spring semester. Transfer or returning students must have taken 30 hours at UNI (can include those taken during spring semester). Must have 12 hours in Department of Family, Aging & Counseling (31F:xxx, 31I:xxx, 31L:xxx, 31S:xxx, 31T:xxx) at UNI (can include those taken during spring semester). Full or part time (6 hour minimum) students may apply. Part time students will be eligible for partial scholarships only. Past recipients may apply providing criteria are met.  Applications will be reviewed with emphasis on: participation in campus and community activities, leadership and service, scholarship, and future goals (personal, educational, and professional).

Marjorie Gibson Leighty Scholarship
  • Declared undergraduate major in Department of Family, Aging & Counseling at UNI
  • Total cumulative GPA of 3.00
  • Full time student
  • Sophomore or junior standing (30-60 hours) by the end of spring semester

Applications will be reviewed with emphasis on: financial need, participation in campus and community activities, leadership and service, scholarship, and future goals (personal, educational, and professional). Preference will be given to those in need of financial support. Preference will be given to a first year recipient for a second year providing criteria is met. Preference may be given to individuals with a stated interest in using their education in a teaching capacity.

Martha Peterson Shedd Scholarship
  • Declared undergraduate major in Department of Family, Aging & Counseling at UNI
  • Total cumulative GPA of 2.50
  • Full time student

Applications will be reviewed with emphasis on: financial need, leadership, and citizenship, and future goals (personal, educational, and professional). Preference will be given to those in need of financial support. Past recipients may apply providing criteria are met.

Elizabeth Sutherland Howes Scholarship
  • Declared undergraduate major in Department of Family, Aging & Counseling at UNI
  • Awarded to a senior student with outstanding achievement, leadership, and service in the department
  • Total cumulative GPA of 3.25

Prestigious award given by Department of Family, Aging & Counseling Alumni Association

Amount: $200
No application required. Recipient is chosen from qualifying seniors
