About IHSMUN

The Iowa High School Model United Nations (IHSMUN) is a hands‑on learning experience where students step into the role of UN ambassadors to debate global issues, negotiate solutions, and draft resolutions. Founded in 1966 and hosted at the University of Northern Iowa, IHSMUN brings together high school students from across Iowa and the Midwest to develop skills in research, public speaking, critical thinking and international diplomacy — all while expanding their global perspective.

Our History & Today

IHSMUN began in 1966 with a vision to give high school students a realistic simulation of the United Nations. The first conference brought together 350 students from 35 Iowa high schools, and within just a few years, attendance topped 1,000 delegates from across the Midwest. From the very beginning, students have gathered to debate pressing global issues, hear from international experts and experience the challenges of diplomacy firsthand.

That same spirit continues today. Delegates prepare by researching their assigned nation, writing position papers and exploring diverse cultural perspectives. At the conference, they step into the role of diplomats — debating in formal committees, drafting and negotiating resolutions and practicing public speaking and leadership skills. Along the way, they build critical thinking abilities, form well‑informed viewpoints and collaborate with peers from across the region. Awards recognize exceptional preparation, diplomacy and performance — but the greatest reward is the growth and confidence students carry forward into their futures.
