How did you become interested in the nursing major at UNI?
I have wanted to be in the healthcare field since high school, and ultimately decided on the nursing profession due to the direct patient care nurses provide. The idea of helping people daily was very important to me. I was at a previous college during my freshman year and began looking to transfer. UNI’s nursing program was a huge factor in my decision to transfer here as I loved the hands-on approach the curriculum is centered around. I loved the integrated classroom approach as we get to practice skills as we learn them. I also liked that the class sizes are small and I would be able to build one-on-one relationships with classmates and my professors.
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the program so far?
I have really enjoyed the hands-on practice. Throughout the first semester we were constantly practicing on the mannequins and each other. We even had one experience where a pediatric patient from the community was brought in. I also enjoy doing the simulations in the rooms with the high fidelity mannequins. The technology is so advanced they are able to make it feel like you are in the room with a live patient. One thing I am really looking forward to is learning how to start an IV. The second semester is filled with learning how to do more hands-on nursing skills like starting an IV and inserting a catheter.
Are you involved in any other activities outside of the classroom?
I am currently a Social and Behavioral Representative (SABR) for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. I also work part time at a nearby hospital as a patient care technician.
Any faculty you’d like to highlight who have helped you along your way?
Both Natalie Nedza and Gina Holman have been so helpful. I was not only navigating a new program, but also a new college and they have been super helpful in answering any questions. They are so understanding and always put students first.
What are your future career aspirations in nursing?
I would love to work in pediatrics, specifically pediatric oncology. I can also see myself going back to school one day to become a nurse practitioner.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
Reach out! Talk to any current students or any of the professors. The culture within the UNI nursing program is amazing and anyone would be happy to give you more information.
