How did you become interested in the nursing major at UNI (and the nursing profession at large)?
My journey into nursing was shaped by my experiences during the war in Ukraine. Witnessing the resilience of healthcare workers in crisis situations made me realize the impact that compassionate and skilled nurses can have on individuals and communities. I initially studied medicine in Ukraine, but after relocating, I chose nursing because it allows me to provide direct, hands-on care while also advocating for public health initiatives. UNI stood out to me because of its strong nursing program and the supportive faculty who are passionate about developing future healthcare leaders.
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the program so far?
One of the highlights of the program has been the sense of community among my peers and faculty. The hands-on clinical experiences have been especially rewarding, giving me the opportunity to apply what I learn in the classroom to real patient care. I also appreciate how the program emphasizes leadership and professional development, which aligns with my goal of making a broader impact in healthcare.
I’m really looking forward to engaging more in research and advocacy, particularly in areas related to global health and ethical considerations in patient care.
Are you involved in any other activities outside of the classroom?
Yes! I’m very active on campus. I serve as the president of the nursing club, where I work to create networking and professional development opportunities for our members. I’m also the a UNI Panther Ambassador, and an Iowa UNA College Ambassador, where I advocate for global issues. Additionally, I work as a CNA and as a Student Associate in international admissions, helping prospective students navigate their journey to UNI.
Outside of academics, I love playing pickleball and chess, and I’ve even won chess tournaments. I also model and enjoy creative projects like writing.
Any faculty you’d like to highlight who have helped you along your way?
There have been several faculty members who have played a huge role in my journey, but I’d especially like to highlight Nancy, the director of the nursing program, Prof. Natalie, Dr. Jimmy, and Prof. Gina they have been incredibly supportive, ensuring that I have the resources I need to succeed also My academic advisor Colleen. Their leadership and dedication to student success have inspired me to push myself further.
What are your future career aspirations in nursing?
I see nursing as more than just bedside care—it's a platform for change. My goal is to combine clinical practice with advocacy and leadership. I want to work in public health and international healthcare initiatives, addressing disparities in medical access and ethical concerns in research. Eventually, I’d love to pursue policy work to shape healthcare systems on a larger scale.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
Nursing is not just about memorizing medical terms or administering care—it’s about resilience, adaptability, and compassion. My advice is to immerse yourself in hands-on experiences early, whether through volunteering, shadowing, or working as a CNA. Also, find a mentor who can guide you through the challenges and opportunities in the field. Lastly, never lose sight of why you chose nursing; that passion will carry you through the toughest days.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’d just say that nursing is a profession that allows you to touch lives in ways you never imagined. Whether through direct patient care, advocacy, or leadership, you have the power to make a difference. If you’re considering it, take the leap—you won’t regret it.
