What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?

My mom, Amanda, inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. Growing up, my mom was getting her masters degree online and did a lot of nursing work at home while taking care of two kids at the time. I loved the way my mom cares for her patients and residents, and I knew at a young age I wanted to care for others the way she did.

Why did you choose UNI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program?

I chose UNIs BSN program because it was close to home and the class sizes are small. I learn best in a small class size, so it was nice that the program has that. I also enjoy the hands-on simulations we get to participate in, and there are plenty of opportunities to further our hands-on learning.

What have been some of your favorite parts of the program so far?

Some of my favorite parts of the program so far are being in the simulation lab. Being able to apply my knowledge to a scenario helps me practice my skills in a situation where they are needed. I have also found some amazing friends during the courses, and because of the small class size we all know one another and are comfortable with each other.

What are you most excited to experience or accomplish next?

I am excited to do clinical rotations in the spring! Going to the hospital and applying my learning and skills to real life scenarios with real patients will grow my learning in real life scenarios. I am also looking forward to learning more about the specifics of different nursing specialities.

Have you had any healthcare experience outside the program — before or during your time at UNI? How has it influenced your nursing journey or your experience in the program so far?

Before and during my time at UNI I have worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Creekside Nursing Facility. Being able to have that exposure before coming into nursing school helped me connect conditions and medications that my residents have with what we were learning, and helped me better understand my residents and what we learned.

Is there a professor or mentor who has made a difference in your nursing journey so far?

Professor Kerri Johnson has made a positive impact on my nursing journey. The way she lectures and encourages her students to work hard and understand the material made her class one to look forward to. Her lecturing style and the way she interacts with her students have inspired me to want to achieve my masters and teach nursing.

What are your career goals or dreams for the future of your nursing career?

My future dreams are to be a labor and delivery nurse close to home, and possibly get my masters degree online to teach nursing.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about studying nursing at UNI?

Be confident in yourself! It is not as scary as you think, be proud of yourself and you will do great! Its an awesome program with great professors, so don’t be afraid to reach out to them with questions!
