What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?

I was inspired to pursue nursing because I enjoy caring for people and being someone they can rely on during challenging times. Working at assisted living showed me how much patience, compassion, and good communication can improve someone’s day, and my clinical experiences reinforced my interest in learning about the body and applying that knowledge to provide safe, effective care. Nursing allows me to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, which motivates me to keep growing in this field.

Why did you choose UNI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program?

I chose UNI’s new BSN program because it’s close to home and offers updated training. The new program feels modern and gives me the skills I need to start my nursing career.

What have been some of your favorite parts of the program so far?

Some of my favorite parts of the program so far have been getting to know my classmates and building friendships, having professors who are really kind and genuinely care about my life, and learning new hands-on skills like inserting IVs, catheters, and NG tubes.

What are you most excited to experience or accomplish next?

I’m most excited to start clinicals and get hands-on experience caring for actual patients. It will be a chance to apply what I’ve learned in class and build my confidence in real-life nursing skills.

Have you had any healthcare experience outside the program — before or during your time at UNI? How has it influenced your nursing journey or your experience in the program so far?

Yes, I’ve had healthcare experience working in assisted living and memory care. It’s helped me feel more comfortable around patients and taught me how important communication, patience, and compassion are. That experience has made the skills I’m learning in the program feel more natural and has given me more confidence as I move forward in nursing.

Is there a professor or mentor who has made a difference in your nursing journey so far?

Yes, Professor Heit has made a big difference in my nursing journey. She is supportive, encouraging, and really cares about her students’ success. Her guidance and advice have helped me feel more confident in my skills and motivated me to keep learning and growing in the program.

What are your career goals or dreams for the future of your nursing career?

My career goal is to work as a labor and delivery or NICU nurse, either in Cedar Rapids to stay close to home or at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. I want to provide specialized care to mothers and newborns, using my skills to support families during such important and sometimes challenging moments.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about studying nursing at UNI?

My advice would be to become friends with your classmates and build strong relationships with your professors. Your classmates will be your support system, and the professors genuinely want to help you succeed and are there to guide you along the way.

Anything else you’d like to share about your experience as a UNI nursing student?

Being a UNI nursing student has been challenging but really rewarding. I’ve learned so much, not just about nursing skills, but also about teamwork, communication, and caring for patients as a whole person. The program has pushed me to grow, and I feel more confident in my abilities and excited for the next steps in my nursing journey.
