How did you become interested in the nursing major at UNI?
I became interested in the nursing program at UNI after going to the Nursing Social that was hosted in October of last year. I really liked the idea of getting top of the line simulation equipment. It allows us to get the real feeling of nursing even before going out into hospitals. I ended up filling out the BSN application right after the Nursing Social! I have always been interested in the nursing field. I’ve always loved helping people and some personal experiences that I have encountered, made me want to help people even more!
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the program so far?
I really enjoy how the professors really want to build a connection with you. It’s been fun to all get to know each other and learn together. I also enjoy when we get to do assessments with each other. It is a great learning experience to do it with a classmate and on top of that, you always get a good laugh at some point! I’m really looking forward to learning how to insert IVs!
Are you involved in any other activities outside of the classroom?
I am in a dance marathon along with working two other jobs!
Any faculty you’d like to highlight who have helped you along your way?
Professor Nedza. She is all of our biggest cheerleaders and very upbeat creating a comfortable and fun environment! She is willing to answer any question and help with anything we need! Professor Holman is very knowledgeable. She answers questions thoroughly and makes sure we understand it! She also creates a comfortable and fun environment!
What are your future career aspirations in nursing?
It changes just about every two weeks, but I’ve been pretty set on pediatric nursing for a while. Sometimes I think I want to do Cardio or even continuing schooling to be a nurse practitioner! I can’t wait for clinical, so I can really get a good idea of what I want to do!
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
There's no doubt it is tough and it's a constant uphill battle, but in the end it is all worth it. It is so much fun and if you're considering nursing, you SHOULD DO IT!
