What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
I was inspired to pursue a career in nursing because I’ve always felt drawn to helping people in moments when they need support the most. I love the idea of being able to combine compassion with hands-on skills to make a real difference in someone’s life. Nursing also stood out to me because it’s a career where you never stop learning. Every patient, situation, and setting helps you grow.
Why did you choose UNI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program?
I chose UNI’s BSN program because it offers the supportive and hands-on education I was looking for. I felt drawn to the more personable, smaller class sizes and the opportunity to build personal relationships with the professors. On top of that, UNI’s focus on leadership, critical thinking, and real world application made me feel like I would graduate ready to jump into a nursing career and truly make a difference.
What have been some of your favorite parts of the program so far?
Some of my favorite parts of the program have been the hands-on learning experiences and the supportive environment within the nursing department. I have really enjoyed practicing skills in the lab and simulation settings because they help me feel more confident before going into clinicals next year. I also appreciate how approachable the instructors are. They genuinely want us to succeed and are always willing to answer questions or offer extra guidance. On top of that, getting to know my classmates and working together as a team has made the program feel encouraging and motivating. Overall, these experiences have helped me grow not just academically, but also personally and professionally.
What are you most excited to experience or accomplish next?
I am most excited to start clinicals. I have learned so much in the classroom and skills labs, and am looking forward to finally applying that knowledge with real patients. Clinicals feel like the moment when everything comes together. Building confidence, developing my own nursing style, and seeing firsthand how nurses make a difference. I’m excited to learn from experienced nurses, practice new skills, and continue growing into the kind of nurse I want to become. I am also really looking forward to building deeper relationships with my classmates outside of class. I’m excited for the chance to support my classmates through clinical experiences, study sessions, and just spending time together outside of the classroom.
Have you had any healthcare experience outside the program — before or during your time at UNI? How has it influenced your nursing journey or your experience in the program so far?
I haven’t had any healthcare experience which has been the most challenging for me, but on the other hand, starting fresh has actually been really motivating for me. It’s pushed me to take my coursework and skills labs seriously because everything I’m learning is brand new. Not having prior experience has also made me appreciate how supportive the faculty and my classmates are. I have never felt judged for asking questions or needing extra practice. Even without any healthcare experience, the program has helped me be more confident and it’s shown me that I’m capable of becoming a good nurse with the right guidance and effort.
Is there a professor or mentor who has made a difference in your nursing journey so far?
Professor Meier and Professor Holman have made a big impact on me already. Their support, patience, and willingness to break things down when I’m struggling has honestly helped build my confidence in my skills and overall in general. They create an environment where it feels safe to ask questions and learn from mistakes, which is so important in nursing. Having professors like them who genuinely want us to succeed has made a huge difference in how supported and comfortable I feel in the program.
What are your career goals or dreams for the future of your nursing career?
In the future, I’m really interested in working in either psychiatric nursing or the NICU. I’m drawn to psych because I want to support patients during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives and help them feel understood, safe, and supported. In high school I lost 4 classmates and friends to suicide, which has also sparked my passion to help those who are struggling. At the same time, I’ve always had a passion for caring for infants and children, which led me to work at a daycare for 4 years now. The NICU inspires me because of the compassion and calm that nurses bring to newborns and their families. I’m excited to explore both areas more as I move through the program and clinicals, and in the end, find where I feel the strongest connection.
What advice would you give to students who are thinking about studying nursing at UNI?
My biggest advice is to trust the process and just do it! UNI’s nursing program is challenging, but you’re surrounded by instructors who truly want you to succeed and classmates who quickly become a strong support system. Stay organized, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to practice skills until you feel confident. Also, get involved and build relationships early. Having friends in the program makes everything more relaxed and a lot more fun. If you’re passionate about nursing and willing to put in the work, UNI is a great place to grow into the nurse you want to be.
Anything else you’d like to share about your experience as a UNI nursing student?
One thing I would add is just how grateful I am for the sense of community in the program. Even when things get stressful, I never feel like I’m going through it alone. There’s always someone willing to study together, practice skills, or just listen. The instructors genuinely care about us, not just as students but as future nurses and as people. Being a part of this program has helped me grow in confidence, find a supportive group of classmates, and feel excited about the career I’m working toward.
