Master of Arts in Geography
The University of Northern Iowa offers a two-year Master of Arts in Geography program with options in many subfields of geography, including:
- Remote sensing
- Physical (fluvial and glacial geomorphology, soils)
- Geographic education
Program offers many sub-disciplines to explore, including GIS & Remote Sensing, Environmental & Earth Systems, Geomorphology, Human Spatial Systems, Planning & Dvpt, and Geography Ed.
Department offers a number of teaching and research assistantships. Qualifying graduate students can also apply for the Graduate College Tuition Scholarship.
Profs are experts in a wide variety of fields, including GIS, Geoarcheology, Gender and Culture, Arctic, Rivers, Political Behavior, Urban Planning, Transportation and many more.

The Master of Arts degree in Geography is available on the research (thesis) and professional (non-thesis) options. Assistantships & Funding
The Department has a limited number of Graduate teaching and research Assistantships available for qualifying graduate students. For the 2021-2022 academic year, the Geography Graduate Assistantship full-time salary is $14,376 and half-time salary is $7,188. Qualifying graduate students can also apply for the Graduate College Tuition Scholarship. The department makes every effort (not guaranteed) to provide students with an assistantship a matching scholarship.Learn more about assistantships
