What brought you to UNI?

It was close enough to home where I could care for and be with family but far enough where I was able to grow on my own! It felt like the perfect size for me.

What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?

I’ve enjoyed so much at UNI. I enjoyed the courses, the professors who were so flexible with my military training, and all of the different opportunities. My grandpa was the most influential person in my academic journey. He held me to the highest standard and ensured I did my best in all aspects of life, not just academics. He was my biggest supporter.

How did you become interested in your program?

My future plans and goals brought my interest to the program at UNI. I plan to work as a social worker in the military. Learning trauma informed care with social work was key to that goal. It was a program I could complete accelerated and continue onto bigger goals.

How have you been involved outside of the classroom?

I was an intern at Cedar Valley Hospice where I met the most amazing people and families that I will cherish forever. I found my passion in hospice which influenced my career path. I’m a Medical Services Officer in the Army Iowa National Guard where I was able, thanks to my amazing professors, continue my masters while in Texas for the last semester.

Post-graduation plans?

I accepted a position as a Hospice Social Worker at UnityPoint in Cedar Rapids, IA where I will continue to support families and patients during their most difficult times.

How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?

They taught me to adapt to change. Not everything goes as planned and being resilient is a key part of success.

What advice would you give to students currently looking into grad schools?

Don’t shy away from change, change is a great way to see different opportunities and grow. Adversity is something we will face everyday of our lives, how we respond is how we will continue to grow.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I cannot thank UNI enough for adapting to all of my military training and ensuring I was taken care of for success. I couldn’t have met the Masters requirements without their help the last three months of the program. They never held me back from achievement.
