What brought you to UNI?

My background includes working as a Certified Nurses Assistant in a long-term care facility while in high school as well as in college and as an Emergency Department Technician. I have most recently worked at the University of Northern Iowa as a Graduate Assistant for Student Accessibility Services, and have been deployed as Combat Medic through the Iowa Army National Guard to Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar. Throughout my college career, I have also been an intern for the Area Education Agency as well as the County Veteran Affairs Commission.

What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?

During my time at the University of Northern Iowa Trauma Informed MSW's program, I have learned an integrated approach to treating trauma. My favorite classes have been Primary and Secondary Trauma and the Trauma Informed practice classes. All of my professors and advisors have been extremely helpful in my journey and I could not thank them enough. Libby Fry, Dr. Rebecca Dickinson, Dr. Matthew Vasquez, and Dr. Sei Young-Lee.

How did you become interested in your program?

I became interested in the program after attending my Undergraduate degree at UNI. I really enjoyed the learning I had as an Undergrad and was excited to continue my education at this University. Most of the faculty that taught undergrad also teach the MSW program, so I really enjoyed that aspect as well.

How have you been involved outside of the classroom?

This year I have been an intern for the Area Education Agency in the Hudson Community School District as well as the Marshalltown School District.

Post-graduation plans?

Upon graduation, I will be working for a telehealth agency based out of Des Moines, Iowa that provides therapeutic services remotely. I will be living in Little Rock, Arkansas.

How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?

The skills that I have learned include therapeutic techniques as well as how trauma affects the brain and body. The information I have learned will be a big part of my future job as a therapist and will help me better assist the clients I come in contact with.

What advice would you give to students currently looking into grad schools?

I would highly recommend this program for anyone interested in pursuing a career in trauma work. The information taught is relevant and the faculty are always there to help with anything. For anyone looking into graduate school, I would recommend taking the time for reflection and self-care as much as you can!
