Compassion. Drive. Perseverance.

Gerontology is the study of aging and related issues. Careers in gerontology will show tremendous growth in the future due to the aging of the Baby Boom generation and increased longevity in our society. Geriatrics is a similar field that is more focused on health-related needs of older adults.

The Gerontology minor may be useful for students in the following majors:

  • Psychology
  • Leisure Services
  • Social Work
  • Sociology
  • Family Services
  • Heath Promotion
  • Marketing

Students may declare a minor in Gerontology at the Registrar's Office in Gilchrist Hall or by visiting the SAHS main office in 235 Latham.

#1 in

UNI offers the ONLY four-year gerontology program in the state of Iowa.

The need for professionals in the field of aging is growing exponentially, as the population in the United States ages rapidly.

The demand for elder care will be fueled by a steep rise in the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, which could nearly triple to 14 million by 2050.
