Dr. Hanke is invested in teaching counselors about intervention and prevention across the lifespan and how to better serve older adults.
In addition to her teaching and administrative duties, Dr. Hanke is also the assistant director of the Dementia Simulation House, working closely with Dr. Elaine Eshbaugh, professor of Gerontology at UNI. Prior to her current position, Dr. Hanke began as a UNI as an adjunct instructor. She was also the director and senior staff counselor at the Medical Student Counseling Center at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She has taught counseling at Bradley University and Buena Vista University and has taught student affairs administration at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She was an instructor and academic advisor at Kirkwood Community College. She also counseled youth and their families at a nonprofit agency.
Dr. Hanke is interested in how theater improvisation principles and skills can be integrated with experiential approaches to counseling to assist clients and to train and supervise counselors. She participates in a weekly improvisation with other therapists through Improv Therapy Group.
