What brought you to UNI?

I have had family members and a lot of my friends go to UNI and they all loved it. I also felt like this was the place for me when I visited the campus in high school.

What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?

The most rewarding thing for me is the friends that I have made and the knowledge that I have gained. Dr. Kysar, Dr. Baker, and Dr. Froyum have been the most influential part of my academic journey. They have taught me a lot and been there when I needed them.

How did you become interested in your major?

I have always had an interest in this major. Partly due to the TV shows that I watch and my friends. This major also interested me because it is a way for me to help people that need it most.

What were some of your favorite classes?

Some of my favorite classes include medical sociology, childhood inequalities, social inequalities, race, ethnicity, and social justice. I also really loved juvenile justice, women, crime and society, and victimology.

How have you been involved outside of the classroom?

I am part of the criminology and PAHT (panthers against human trafficking) clubs. I have also done and independent study and internship with Dr. Baker.

Post-graduation plans?

I plan to work at Wildwood hills ranch as a youth leader over the summer. I will then be going to The University of Iowa in Iowa city for a psychology degree.

How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?

UNI has really helped me develop problem solving skills which will be beneficial in my career or education. Taking senior seminar (for criminology majors) was also very beneficial because I got to network with people in all different fields of criminology. Those connections will help me find a job in the future.

What advice would you give to high school seniors (and/or transfer students)?

One piece of advice is to join so if the clubs on campus (especially the criminology club). I know I’m a little biased towards the criminology club because I’m a leader but we help people get connections and we have had the FBI come and talk to us which is pretty cool. I also advise you to do an internship because it will really help you decide what may or may not be for you.

Anything else you’d like to add?

The last thing that I have to add is that you should communicate with your teachers. They are all super nice and just want you to do the best that you can. If there is anything going on or you don’t understand something they will all help you to the best of their abilities.
