“I graduated high school from a small school, and I was looking for a college that was still big enough to get out of my comfort zone but was not too overwhelming. UNI was a perfect fit for me once I toured campus and met faculty!

I took intro to sociology as a freshman, and I was fascinated to learn about social inequalities and how it systematically impacts families in the United States. When I started taking classes that catered to the social inequalities in the criminal justice system, it built a fire in my gut to be a promoter of change and to advocate for clients I work with.

I supervise individuals who are on Probation or Parole. The focus is providing clients with resources (mental health, cognitive programming etc), teaching skills (cost benefit, problem solving, etc), modeling said skills, and motivating. I enjoy seeing a positive transition in a client’s life and this in turn creates a safer community.

Being a sociology major taught me the importance of understanding that a client’s upbringing has a substantial impact on one’s ability to be successful. I carry this knowledge to my current role by being patient and being realistic with the courts and supervision expectations.”
