Theory courses provide coverage of concepts from several social science disciplines that are essential to the analysis of public policy. These courses are required of all students.

The Public Policy Process (POL AMER 5173, 3 hrs) examines theoretical models of the political processes by which public policy is made. It teats cases in major policy areas.

 Public Organizations (POL AMER 5153, 3 hrs) treats the internal dynamics of complex public organizations and their role in politics and public policy.

 Public Finance (ECON 5221, 3 hrs) integrates the analysis of government expenditure and taxation with basic economic theory and examines the interaction of policy and economic behavior.

 History and U.S. Public Policy (HIST 6020, 3 hrs) applies historical concepts to the examination of the development of public policy over time.
