College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Thank you for your interest in the Master of Public Policy (MPP program) at the University of Northern Iowa.

We have recently redesigned the curriculum for the MPP to be a two-year cohort program beginning in the fall of 2015.  As a cohort program, students will move through the curriculum together in the same courses and at the same pace.  The program is designed to facilitate the schedules of students who are working full time.  As such, students will complete 6 hours each semester.  The MPP may be completed entirely at a distance, although there are some on-campus course options, as well.  In addition to courses on policy analysis, evaluation, politics, and methods, students will complete a three-course sequence on specific policy areas and complete research on a policy area of their choosing.  Applications for the next cohort, to begin in the fall of 2017, will be accepted in the spring and summer of 2017.

Students may also be interested in the graduate Certificate in Public Administration (15 hours), which may be earned on the way to a master’s degree in public policy, or be completed as a stand alone certificate.

Courses offered in both the MPP and graduate Certificate in Public Administration

Goals of the Program

The Master of Public Policy program is a professional, interdisciplinary degree designed to provide students with a combination of skills.  Policy decisions are increasingly becoming more complex, whether these decisions are being made by a government, a non-profit, or a for-profit entity.  To respond effectively to these issues, organizations need professionals who are trained in the political and social aspects of public policy, as well as in the appropriate methods of policy analysis and evaluation.  Policy professionals also need to be knowledgeable about numerous substantive policy areas.  MPP students will take courses and engage in research that develops these skills and substantive knowledge.
