Why did you choose UNI?

I chose UNI because the strong academics, supportive people, and campus size felt like a great fit for me to succeed. I was confident that the experiences and opportunities at UNI would help me grow and prepare for my future.

What is one of your favorite memories of your time at UNI?

One of my favorite memories at UNI was being able to move seamlessly from learning in the classroom to hands-on work at the Cedar Valley Physical Therapy clinic in the HPC. That direct connection between coursework and real-world experience made my time at UNI especially meaningful and confirmed my passion for the field. Outside of the classroom and clinic, I also enjoyed attending UNI sporting events with my friends.

How did you first become interested in your major, and what ultimately led you to pursue it?

My interest in Physical Therapy began at a young age when I was introduced to the profession through my uncle, who is a Physical Therapist. That connection became personal during my junior year of high school when an injury kept me from competing in sports. Through my own rehabilitation, I experienced firsthand the powerful role it plays in restoring health, function, and confidence. I chose to major in Kinesiology & Exercise Science because it provides a strong foundation in health and human science, preparing me for a career in Physical Therapy.

What aspects of your major have you found most engaging or meaningful?

The people I have met in the Kinesiology program have made my experience truly meaningful. I have always been surrounded by individuals who push me to be my best and want to see me succeed. As a Kinesiology major, I have felt part of a team, with faculty who treat students like colleagues. Everyone in the program is passionate about improving the lives of others through health and human movement, which has been inspiring to be a part of.

In what ways have you been involved outside the classroom?

Student Ambassador (SABR): I was nominated to represent the Kinesiology Department at recruitment events and meetings, allowing me to give back by sharing my experiences and passion for the field while strengthening my interpersonal skills.

Exercise Science Club: I have served as President of the Exercise Science Club, where I worked with our executive board members to plan and organize club events, fostering collaboration among individuals on campus and within the community.

Cedar Valley Physical Therapy: For the past two years, I have worked as a Physical Therapy Technician at all Cedar Valley Physical Therapy clinic locations, gaining valuable hands-on experience while actively participating in patient treatments. This opportunity has been very impactful as it has allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to patient care while building a strong foundation in outpatient orthopedic practice.

Additional Involvement: Undergraduate Research, UNI Personal Trainer, Pre-PT Club member

Which professors, mentors or advisors were particularly influential during your time at UNI?

As I chose UNI, Dr. Fabio Fontana, Dr. Kelsey Bourbeau, and Michelle Holland were incredibly welcoming and supportive, ensuring I could always reach out if I ever needed guidance. The faculty and staff in the UNI Kinesiology Department are all very passionate about what they do and have had a lasting impact on my growth, helping me develop as an individual while encouraging me in the pursuit of my goals.

What do you plan to do with your degree?

After graduation, I will be attending a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program to become a Physical Therapist.

How did UNI, and your major, prepare you for your next steps?

During my time at UNI, I have been fortunate to build meaningful connections through a variety of academic and professional experiences. These opportunities reinforced my commitment to my career path while strengthening my leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, and work ethic. I am confident that UNI has prepared me with the skills and experiences needed to succeed beyond graduation.

What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?

To any student considering the Kinesiology & Exercise Science path, I strongly encourage taking the initiative to gain a variety of experiences early on (e.g., shadowing, internships, undergraduate research, club leadership). These experiences help you better understand career options within the field, determine whether the major aligns with your interests, and build confidence in your professional goals. The UNI Kinesiology Department provides students with many valuable opportunities to strengthen their skills while preparing them for future careers. Additionally, faculty and staff are extremely hardworking and dedicated to student success both inside and outside the classroom. I highly recommend exploring the Kinesiology major as it provides a supportive environment that allows students to develop their interests while growing academically and professionally.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I am forever grateful for my family, friends, and the UNI community for the immense support I have received during my time in Cedar Falls. Go Panthers!
