What made you choose the University of Northern Iowa?

I had applied to multiple colleges in Illinois and in the Midwest in general. After taking a tour at UNI, I fell in love with the campus and the community. Plus, given how affordable UNI was for me, choosing this school felt like a no-brainer!

What have you enjoyed the most about your experience at UNI?

I’ve really enjoyed the tight-knit nature of UNI’s community. The smaller class sizes and departments made it easier for me to forge meaningful relationships with professors and close friendships with my classmates! UNI isn’t too big or too small, which made it easy for me to find my niche and make friends quickly.

What first sparked your interest in your major?

I’ve always been interested in politics since I was in middle school, so it seemed natural for me to pick Political Science. I’ve always thought our political system can be used to help people, and I wanted to learn more about it.

What have been some of your favorite aspects of the major?

The variety of classes and professors! There’s so many different topics to learn about as well as dedicated and passionate educators to teach you! I’ve also enjoyed the size of my major. It’s relatively small, so it’s easier to make friends and see familiar faces in different classes.

How have you been involved outside the classroom?

I’ve been involved in a few student activities. I was part of the executive team of the Northern Iowa Democrats, I was a Student Ambassador for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (otherwise known as SABRs), and I was a member of UNI SLAM (a slam poetry student organization). These organizations provided me with outlets to express my passions and discuss my interests with other like-minded students. I also participated in an online internship with TurnUp, a youth-focused political activism organization. This internship allowed me to make a difference while also being flexible with my own schedule.

Which professors or mentors have had the biggest impact on your time at UNI, and how?

If I had to pick just a few, I think I would say Professors Alexandra Kogl, Donna Hoffman, and Scott Peters. Professor Kogl’s classes were always the most enjoyable for me, as she always taught topics with passion and humor. Professor Hoffman was my academic advisor. While I only took one of her classes, she helped me navigate my academic career at UNI, always ensured I was on-track for graduation, and helped me select classes that aligned with my interests. Professor Peters was my Pre-Law advisor. He helped prepare me for the world of law school by giving me all the resources I’d need to begin my law school career.

What are your plans after graduation?

I’m planning on pursuing a J.D. at the Northern Illinois University School of Law, located in Dekalb, Illinois.

In what ways has UNI and your major helped prepare you for your next steps?

UNI has helped me prepare for my next steps by helping me develop professionally through various resources like resume-checking, career fairs, and professional headshots. My major has helped me prepare by developing my critical thinking as well as my reading and writing skills, while also teaching me about topics and concepts that will serve me well in law school.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about pursuing this major?

A lot of people tend to think that politics is either arguing all the time or talking about boring laws. But there’s a lot more to be found in Political Science! The things we talk about have massive importance for your everyday life! If you’re at all passionate (or even interested) in politics, please don’t hesitate to pick this major. The professors are amazing, and you’ll make long-lasting friendships!

Anything else you’d like to share?

UNI has been a wonderful school to attend, and I wish only the best for those who will continue to teach at or attend this amazing institution. Go Cats!
