What brought you to UNI?
I first came to UNI during my sophomore year from another four-year university. The reason for this was that it felt much more like a place where I could excel. I was interested in the Public Administration program and felt like the size and scope of UNI helped contribute to my long-term career plans. I previously came from a larger university in a big city which did not align with my educational or personal goals.
How did you become interested in your major?
I originally started as a Political Science major but quickly fell out of love with it. I have really enjoyed Public Administration because it gives me a better opportunity to be more localized in the Midwest and to help people on a more personal level. I have felt that the degree is much more versatile than I previously thought and I think it can open the door to many opportunities, some of which I didn't know about until beginning my internships.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
My favorite experiences at UNI came in the classroom and with the Housing department. I enjoyed being able to engage with others in the classroom as well as having experiences such as going on a field trip to the Iowa Capital and meeting legislators. Spending time as an RA for a year was interesting but also very rewarding and allowed me to learn more about the university. My two professors, Dr. Chris Larimer and Dr. Jayme Renfro were a huge impact on me in the classroom as well as in my first working roles. They really strengthened my experience on campus and even now since I have been online in a reduced capacity.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
It took me some time to get more adjusted because I transferred in later, but I started out by being on my residence hall's Executive Board. After that, I joined the Housing Department as a Resident Assistant for a year. Last summer, this fall, and for the foreseeable future I have been able to have two separate internships with city governments in Minnesota. While doing this I still have been able to complete classes in the summer and now fall, online.
Post-graduation plans?
I am currently an Administration Intern for the City of Shakopee, Minnesota. I plan to continue this position into the new year with the potential to transition into a full-time role there. I am excited to continue my role because I am able to increase my knowledge about the field and to get help from staff members who have been extremely generous throughout the whole process. I know that I am supported and that there is potential for me to be converted into a full-time position.
How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
I was able to learn a lot about my field through my major by hearing guest speakers and having more specialized classes. I was able to connect with alumni who are in the field I want to go into and learn about their experiences and the different paths they took. I also received a lot of support from faculty during the internship process, and having strong relationships helped me to find a path that worked for me.
What advice would you give to future Panthers?
As someone who has attended two different four-year universities and didn't grow up in Iowa, my best piece of advice would be to trust yourself and to take advantage of the university. There are a number of different ways to find your experience, not just through clubs, and to make the university work for you. The thing that helped me most was understanding that faculty and campus facilities are here for students and to get the most bang for your buck these should be taken advantage of.
