Why did you choose UNI?

I transferred to UNI because of the immediate care from the transfer advisor and professors within the Kinesiology department after reaching out to them to get some more information about the program. After that, I knew UNI would be a good fit with faculty who truly cared about all students, even the ones who were at a different university at the time.

What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?

The best part about UNI has been the people. From professors to classmates and friends, there have been so many people who have had a great impact on my time here.

How did you become interested in your major at UNI?

I became interested in Kinesiology after listening to a presentation by a law school dean of admissions. He stressed that your undergraduate major before law school could be in anything you choose so it should be something you’re passionate about. At UNI specifically, I really liked that I would be able to participate in undergraduate research and get more hands-on experiences to build skills before getting to law school.

How have you been involved outside of the classroom?

I have participated in an undergraduate research group at UNI for nearly two academic years, which has given me a space to improve many hard skills such as research itself, analytical reasoning, and attention to detail, but I learned much beyond those.  Working alongside faculty in the department allowed me to build relationships that were initially fostered in the classroom, and it has been valuable to have such impactful role models as I progress throughout my degree. Having the opportunity to directly learn from experts in their respective fields who are truly passionate about their careers led to furthering my understanding of the value of passion and dedication. Through my research experience, I was ultimately inspired to dig deeper into my purpose for attending law school and someday working in the legal field so that I can one day be as passionate about my career as they are about theirs.

I also had the opportunity to volunteer as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for a course within the department. This was such a unique, valuable experience that allowed me to learn a lot about professionalism and communication. Having the chance to assist students in the course after being in their shoes just a few semesters before was also very rewarding.

What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?

I have had so many positive influences throughout my time at UNI, as every single professor within the Kinesiology department has a true student-first mindset and cares so much about student lives and learning. Dr. Kelsey Bourbeau was one of my first points of contact at the university and has since become my research advisor and a constant, positive source of guidance and advice. Especially as I went through the law school application and admission process, Kelsey was always checking in and helping in any way she could.

What are your post-graduation plans?

Next fall, I will be attending law school at the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City, Iowa.

How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?

UNI has helped prepare me for my future plans by giving me the opportunity to partake in many hands-on experiences such as undergraduate research and volunteering as a teaching assistant. Both experiences, as well as many others, allowed me to build skills that I simply could not gain from strictly classroom environments and formal education. In my opinion, the more exposure to different experiences throughout college, the better, and UNI really places an emphasis on giving students these valuable experiences in their time here.

What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?

Regardless of your plans after graduation, whether it is graduate school or finding a job, always make an effort to connect with your professors. Not only could they be writing your future letters of recommendation, but they can also be a major part of your support system as you progress throughout your degree. They truly care about your learning and success, so never be afraid to ask questions or reach out to them!
