Why did you choose UNI?
I chose UNI because I’m originally from Cedar Falls and have always loved the community here. Staying close to friends and family was important to me, and I was also drawn to UNI’s beautiful campus and its interior design program.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
What I’ve enjoyed most about UNI is the people; they truly are the best. The professors genuinely care and want to see you succeed, and I’ve built such great relationships with them. I’ve also met some of my closest friends through the Interior Design program, Dance Marathon, and studying abroad.
How did you become interested in your major at UNI?
I’ve always been interested in interior design from a young age. In Iowa, there were only a couple of colleges that offered the major, but I wanted a school that was the right size, not too big or too small. UNI felt like the perfect fit, and I had heard great things about the Interior Design program.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
At UNI, I’ve been involved in Dance Marathon, serving as the Director of Design. It was a meaningful experience—I supported kids and families facing life-threatening illnesses at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Iowa City, met incredible people, and used my graphic design skills to make a difference. I’m also active in SIDNI, the Interior Design student organization on campus, which has helped me grow as a designer and stay updated on new trends in the field. One of my most rewarding experiences at UNI was studying abroad—twice! Traveling to Australia and Greece was genuinely life-changing. UNI made it easy, allowing me to learn about different cultures and explore the world.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
Honestly, there are so many great professors at UNI that it’s hard to choose, but two who have really stood out to me are Professor Khamsai Lo and Professor Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi. Professor Lo is always willing to help in our Interior Design computer lab classes and is incredibly knowledgeable about the software we use—he’s helped me bring my design projects to the next level. Professor Gulwadi constantly impresses me with her kindness and support. She’s always there when you need her, ready to help with a smile, and truly wants every student to succeed.
What are your post-graduation plans?
After graduation, I’ll be joining Hannam Design in Cedar Falls as a Junior Interior Designer, where I’ll be working on a variety of projects, with a focus on residential remodels.
How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?
UNI has provided me with incredible connections and opportunities in the field. The Interior Design program prepared me well for interviews, building my portfolio, and creating a strong resume. I’ve truly learned so much and developed valuable skills that I’ll carry into my career.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
Interior Design is so much fun, but it’s definitely not easy. It takes creativity, patience, and a strong work ethic!! I truly love it and find it so fulfilling. You’re never bored, there’s always something new to work on, and by the end, you’ll have a collection of beautiful projects to be proud of. The classes also significantly build your knowledge of the industry and the software tools you use daily.
