What brought you to UNI?
UNI stood out to me because its Social Work Masters program offers the flexibility I need as a working professional. The availability of night and online classes and a schedule that accommodates employment made it an ideal fit for balancing work and graduate studies.
My experiences prior to entering the program include working as a patient care technician in hospice care, and as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Sociology, with a minor in Psychology, from Central College in Pella, Iowa.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
What I enjoyed most about attending UNI was the professors. They were approachable, encouraging, and truly passionate about what they taught. I always felt supported, and their dedication helped me grow both academically and professionally.
How did you become interested in your program?
I became interested in social work because I felt called to support individuals and families during some of the most difficult times of their lives, particularly in end-of-life and crisis care. The opportunity to offer compassion, advocacy, and understanding in those moments is what inspired me to pursue this path.
In what ways have you been involved outside the classroom?
During my time at UNI, I have completed two field experiences. My first placement was with the medical social work team at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where I gained experience in acute care and crisis support. My second was with the Iowa Donor Network, where I served as a family advocate and supported families throughout the organ and tissue donation process. These experiences allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-world settings and deepen my passion for social work.
Which professors, mentors or advisors were particularly influential during your time at UNI?
There are truly too many to name! I deeply appreciated the support I received from so many of my professors. They invested in my growth not only academically but also personally, making me feel supported far beyond the classroom. Their encouragement, guidance, and willingness to be available made a significant impact on my development as a social worker.
Post-graduation plans?
I have accepted a position with my first field placement site. I will be working as an Emergency Department Social Worker at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
How did UNI help prepare you?
UNI prepared me by combining classroom learning with practical field experience. I gained skills in assessment, crisis support, and advocacy, which will help me provide compassionate, effective care and continue growing in my social work career.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this program?
My advice would be to stay curious, embrace challenges, and make the most of both field experiences and mentorship from professors. It will be one of the most rewarding decisions you make!
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A special thank you to my friends and family, especially my grandma, for always believing in me and supporting me throughout this journey. Their encouragement made a huge difference. I’m also grateful for the classmates who have become my friends at UNI. My experience in this program has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally.
