Why did you choose UNI?

I chose UNI because of the community-focused atmosphere. From my very first campus visit, it felt welcoming and personal, a place where professors would know my name and opportunities to get involved would be easy to find. I also appreciated how UNI emphasized both academics and real-world experience, which was really important to me as someone who knew I wanted to work directly with people in the health field.

What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?

What I’ve enjoyed most about attending UNI is the connections I’ve made, both with my peers and with faculty. There’s a strong sense of support here, and I’ve loved getting to be part of so many different experiences.

How did you become interested in your major at UNI?

I became interested in Public Health because I’ve always had a passion for helping people, especially in preventive and educational ways. Growing up as the oldest sibling, I naturally stepped into a caregiving role, and over time I realized I wanted to turn that instinct into a career. At UNI, taking an intro public health course confirmed that for me, it opened my eyes to the many ways health impacts every part of people’s lives and how education can be a powerful tool for change.

How have you been involved outside of the classroom?

Outside of class, I stayed very involved. I worked as a fitness instructor for the UNI Recreation Center, which allowed me to combine my love for movement and wellness while building leadership skills. I worked as a Student Health Ambassador for the UNI Student Health Center advocating for the student body’s needs. I maintained the title of President of the Health and Family Services Club during my 3rd year at UNI. Additionally, I participated in research projects and volunteered at local organizations like focusing on community wellness.

What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?

Throughout my time at UNI, Dr. Anne Plagge has been most influential on my growth. Dr. Plagge’s guidance, kindness, and extensive knowledge made a profound impact on me during my time at UNI. She has a way of making her students feel seen and supported, while also pushing us to be our best. Her well-rounded experiences helped prepare me for the workforce, giving me the confidence and tools I’ll carry with me long after graduation.

What are your post-graduation plans?

Account Manager for Health and Wellness at HealthCheck360 in Dubuque, IA.

How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?

Academically, the Public Health program gave me a solid foundation in health promotion, program planning, and community health education. Most importantly, I learned how to think critically, adapt to different situations, and approach challenges with a solution-focused mindset. Beyond the classroom, UNI provided opportunities for real-world experience through internships, volunteer work, student organizations and campus involvement.

What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?

My advice for students considering this major is to take every opportunity to get involved outside the classroom. Intern, volunteer, as much as you can! Public health is such a broad field, and those hands-on experiences are where you’ll discover what areas you love and where you want to make an impact. It also helps you build connections, gain practical skills, and see firsthand how public health work affects communities.
