What brought you to UNI?

I elected to make a mid-career change into social work.  I was looking for a program that was local to Iowa and allowed me the flexibility to work full-time while completing my masters on a part-time, after-hours capacity.

What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?

I enjoyed the excellent faculty and different experiences that they brought to the program.  I also enjoyed how flexible the program was and how it allowed me to continue to work while completing my education.

How did you become interested in your program?

I was looking for a social work program that was CSWE accredited, allowed distant learning, and was local to Iowa.  UNI was a great match that allowed me to continue my career progression and gave me the experience I needed to exceed post-graduation.

In what ways have you been involved outside the “classroom”?

I was able to do a foundation practicum and a specialization practicum that gave me real-world experience working in social work.  UNI has agreements with plenty of practicum sites that allowed me flexibility in my choices and gave me a variety of experiences.

Which professors, mentors or advisors were particularly influential during your time at UNI, and how did they support your growth?

There was many professors and advisors that were part of my journey, and some that stand out include Rebecca Dickinson, Libby Fry, Lane Forsman and Jenny Becker. They all have great experience in the field and are very passionate in what they do.  Their experience allowed me to gain insight in macro, mezzo and micro level social work practices.

Post-graduation plans?

I am currently in early stages of accepting an offer from the Iowa City VA as a social worker.  I hope to receive a formal offer by late December, once my transcripts are available.

How did UNI help prepare you?

UNI gave me the tools to succeed as a social worker.  Between research, activities, and role-play as a social worker and client, it allowed me to work through different scenarios, getting feedback on how to improve myself and my skills.

What advice would you give to students who are considering this program?

This is a great program that has great faculty and allows flexibility for students that may be anywhere in their career, including students that are working full-time.  The program has also been great for myself as a current member of the military, and has been flexible when I needed to go to military training.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I wouldn’t have completed the program without the help of my wife and son, and their never-ending support to encourage me to go back to school to meet my career goals.
