What made you choose the University of Northern Iowa?

I chose the University of Northern Iowa because of its strong social work program and the welcoming environment I experienced from faculty during my visit. The campus size is also a great fit for me — not too big or too small — and it truly feels like home.

What have you enjoyed the most about your experience at UNI?

I have enjoyed growing my confidence as both a student and a person. Every professor I’ve had has made an impact on me, and I’ve been able to build meaningful connections with many of them. I’ve also met some incredible students and made lasting friendships through my classes and internship experiences.

What first sparked your interest in your major?

My interest in social work began when I met an impactful social worker in high school. From that point on, I knew it was the career path I wanted to pursue. I have a strong passion for helping others, and I feel I would thrive in a career where I can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What have been some of your favorite aspects of the major?

Some of my favorite aspects of my major have been the hands-on experiences through volunteering at Care Initiatives Hospice and Cedar Valley Preschool and Childcare Center and my internship at the Panther Pantry, and seeing how the coursework shows up in real life. I’ve really enjoyed class discussions about diversity, social issues, and how larger systems affect people’s lives, which has helped me better understand social work. I’ve also really appreciated the supportive relationships I’ve built with my professors and classmates along the way.

How have you been involved outside the classroom?

Through my SW 1041 Global Social Work course, I presented research at the INSPIRE Conference with two classmates. This strengthened my confidence in presenting research findings and working collaboratively. I also interned at the campus food pantry during the Spring 2026 semester, where I gained valuable field experience and met some amazing people.

Which professors or mentors have had the biggest impact on your time at UNI, and how?

Libby Fry, the BSW program director, has been the biggest support during my time at UNI. You can tell she truly cares about her students and is willing to go above and beyond to help them succeed. She has encouraged me, supported my growth in the program, and has always been someone I feel comfortable going to for guidance and advice. Just as importantly, Rebecca Dickinson, a BSW associate professor, has been a wealth of knowledge in my social work studies. She has deepened my understanding of social justice and diversity, and I have truly learned so much from her as a professor. I will always be grateful for both of them.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plans after graduation are to return to the University of Northern Iowa to earn my Master of Social Work with a specialization in Trauma-Informed Care.

In what ways has UNI and your major helped prepare you for your next steps?

The University of Northern Iowa has helped prepare me for graduate school through knowledge and hands-on experience in the field. I have gained a deeper understanding of ethics and social justice through my coursework, and my hands-on experiences have strengthened my confidence in working with individuals and allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to real-life settings.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about pursuing this major?

My advice to students who are thinking about pursuing this major is to go into it with an open mind, be ready to challenge what you thought to be right, and be willing to learn from different perspectives and experiences. It is also important to have an understanding of the emotional and rewarding aspects of the field, as you will be helping individuals through hardships.
