What brought you to UNI?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Public Administration with a minor in Public Relations at UNI. My professors were fantastic and engaged and made me want to continue my education. My undergraduate degree allowed me to secure a position in the Ames City Manager’s Office where I was able to gain experience while working towards my Masters. I valued the relationships that I had developed with my professors and was confident that further education under them would be invaluable.

What did you enjoy most about attending the MPP program at UNI?

Again, it was the professors that made a difference! Even though the program was online, my professors took the time to engage and develop relationships that encouraged us to succeed.

How did you become interested in the MPP program at UNI?

I knew that UNI offered that, was familiar with the expertise of my professors, who also taught classes in the MPP program, and felt that UNI was invested in my success!

What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?

Dr. Jayme Renfro was a real difference maker for me. She encouraged me, invested in me, and believed in me beyond what I felt was possible. I had an nontraditional timeline in the program and she was more than willing to work with me and establish ways for me to be successful in the MPP program and my work experiences after. I would not have been able to reach my goals without her guidance and encouragement.

Post-graduation plans?

I will be the Membership Services Coordinator for the Iowa League of Cities in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m very excited!

How did the MPP program prepare you for your post-graduation plans?

My classes gave me experience and confidence analyzing data, a foundation of how politics have progressed and continued to be shaped, make informed policy recommendations, and enhance the outputs of any future organizations I worked with. Classes being on Zoom and the ability to interact with my classmates and hear policy perspectives and trends from their area of expertise and communities was very enlightening and I appreciated the collaborative atmosphere.

What advice would you give to students currently looking into grad schools?

You will not find professors who are more invested in your success anywhere else. Dr. Renfro and Dr. Larimer were fundamental supporters of my educational journey and have truly helped shape me personally and professionally to be constantly learning and believing in what I can achieve.

Additionally, the small class sizes and style of classes allows for great interactions between professors and students that allow for true growth and understanding to occur. There are not enough words to describe how grateful I am that I chose UNI!
