Why did you choose UNI?
I chose UNI because the Interior Design program focuses more on human-centered design, unlike other colleges where the emphasis is more architectural. I was also drawn to UNI for its welcoming atmosphere, its proximity to home, and the strong connections I can build with both professors and peers.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
I have especially enjoyed the leadership and involvement opportunities UNI has provided, along with the valuable exposure gained through our annual design trips and my experience working as a design assistant for the Design and Construction department at Facilities Management.
How did you become interested in your major at UNI?
I love helping people, and Interior Design allows me to do that in a creative way. I’m passionate about designing spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
Over the past 2.5 years, I’ve worked as a design assistant with the Design and Construction department at Facilities Management, gaining valuable hands-on experience. I’ve also taken on leadership roles within the Student Interior Designers of Northern Iowa (SIDNI), serving as Secretary and Vice President, following earlier involvement as an active member. In addition, I am a student representative (SABR) for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and served as a teacher’s assistant last spring, further enriching my academic experience.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
The professors who have had the greatest impact on me during my time at UNI are Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi, along with adjunct instructors Lindsay Drewis and Megan Hannam. Their support has helped me grow not only as a student and professional, but also as a person.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to stay in the Cedar Valley and will be working at 319 Decor and Design in Grundy Center, IA as an Interior Design Intern over the summer.
How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?
UNI has provided me with numerous opportunities that have challenged me and given me valuable hands-on experience I will carry with me beyond my college career.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
My advice to students considering this major is to be ready for a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey. Interior Design is so much more than what meets the eye — and even more exciting and fulfilling than I ever imagined when I first started college. And lastly, soak it up and get involved! It goes by fast.
