Why did you choose UNI?
I chose UNI because I loved the community and smaller class sizes. Everyone was so incredibly kind and helpful when I visited, and I instantly felt welcomed.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
I have loved the many leadership opportunities provided by UNI and the welcoming community. UNI has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally, which I will always appreciate!
How did you become interested in your major?
I originally came in as a history major because I loved my history classes in high school, and I declared a political communication double major after attending Majors in Minutes my freshman year because I felt the degree tailored to my specific areas of interest.
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the major?
I have loved the critical thinking skills required by my history degree, and the many interesting classes offered by the department from women’s history to Greek and Roman history. I have loved my political communication degree because it has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, learn about topics that impact our society today, and it allowed me to recognize my future career aspirations.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I have studied abroad in Greece for three weeks with Professor Bruess, and I have been involved in numerous student organizations. I was a Senator for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in Northern Iowa Student Government, Director of Public Relations for NISG, a writer, News Editor, and eventually Executive Editor of the Northern Iowan, Director of New Member Engagement for Panther Ambassadors, a SABR, and Vice President of ThreeHouse Collaborative Campus Ministries.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
Dr. Nikki Harken has been a continuous voice of support during my time here at UNI, as well as Dr. Fernando Calderón, Dr. Gregory Bruess, Dr. Jayme Renfro, Dr. Robert Dise, and Eric Braley.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I will be moving to Tallahassee, Florida, and pursuing a career in communication, either in the higher education or journalism industry.
How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?
UNI has prepared me immensely for post-graduation through numerous leadership opportunities and by pushing me outside of my comfort zone.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
History: Tailor your classes the best you can to your areas of interest. If you have to write an essay for a class, try and tie it back to a topic you are passionate about researching.
Political Communication: This is such a unique degree that has so much to offer. Don’t be afraid to speak up in class, ask questions, and let your voice be heard.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Enjoy your Panther experience while you can! Take advantage of everything UNI has to offer, and make the most of your experience.
