Why did you choose UNI?

I chose UNI due to the proximity to home, as well as the fact that it is regarded as one of the premier teaching colleges in the state. I knew UNI would allow me to prepare myself for my future career as an educator.

What is one of your favorite memories of your time at UNI?

My favorite memory of my time at UNI was meeting some close friends at my college ministry, as well as during my history of climate change class with Professor Rumsey.

How did you first become interested in your major, and what ultimately led you to pursue it?

I took a field trip to Living History Farms in 4th grade, and I have been interested in history ever since. My teachers in high school encouraged me to pursue teaching, as evidently they saw some teacher traits in me.

What aspects of your major have you found most engaging or meaningful?

My student teaching has far and away been the most engaging and meaningful experience for me as a future teacher. My field experiences were also valuable, but working with students for 16 weeks has been fantastic for my growth.

In what ways have you been involved outside the classroom?

Student teaching was incredibly impactful for me. I had two eight-week placements, and I got the opportunity to engage with students from 6th-12th grade. I got to plan units, modify instruction, and many more things, which have led to much growth in my confidence as a future teacher.

Which professors, mentors or advisors were particularly influential during your time at UNI?

Chad Christopher: As my advisor, and level three field experience teacher, Chad helped keep me on track to graduate. He also taught me many valuable skills for the field of social studies teaching. I would recommend everyone get to know him, even if you are in a different major.

Kady Korbel: Kady was my student teaching coordinator. She gave me tons of valuable feedback and advice, and she truly helped shape me into the person I am today.

Ashley Jorgensen: Ashley was my level two field experience coordinator. She gave me tons of great feedback, and she pushed me to take ambitious steps in my teaching even when I was unsure of myself.

Kenneth Atkinson: Kenneth was the best professor I had during my time in college. I had him for a senior seminar about the Cold War, and he was the perfect teacher for that class. He served during the Cold War, and he was able to provide a perspective that other teachers could not. He was also very kind and understanding, which are crucial qualities for a teacher.

Brian Rumsey: Brian was an amazing teacher as well. I met one of my best friends in his class, due to Brian’s strategy of making students sit in random seats during discussions. He was engaging and kind, and I cannot thank him enough for the random seating arrangement.

What do you plan to do with your degree? Do you already know your next steps or have a position?

I do not know where I will be teaching, but I hope to teach social studies at a school in Iowa (middle or high school).

How did UNI, and your major, prepare you for your next steps?

I am well-prepared for my future as a teacher.

What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?

Try it out for a year, and see if you enjoy it. You truly won’t know if you enjoy teaching until you get into a classroom, so don’t quit before you see what it is actually like. STAY POSITIVE!

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I would like to thank my mom, Amy, for always encouraging me.  She is a teacher, and she has positively pushed me to do my best, even when I had doubts. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
