What brought you to UNI?

After earning an associate’s degree from Iowa Lakes Community College and a Bachelor of Art and Design from Iowa State University in 2011, I pursued a career in graphic design and strategic communications that led to a communications role at University of Iowa. I knew I had a passion for public services and passion for behavioral sciences research.

What did you enjoy most about attending the MPP program at UNI?

The breadth of experience my cohort brought to the program was a real highlight. Their variety of perspectives and professional experience combined with the instruction and expertise of the faculty created an unique learning opportunity.

How did you become interested in the MPP program at UNI?

I knew I had a passion for public services and passion for behavioral sciences research. I found myself at a point in my career where I wanted to open more opportunities for myself in higher education, and felt an advanced degree in public policy and administration that would allow me to continue to work full-time was ideal.

What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?

Jayme Renfro and Christopher Larimer

Post-graduation plans?

Communications and marketing manager, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

How did the MPP program prepare you for your post-graduation plans?

The data analysis and evaluations skills I use every day in my career and know the program prepared me for additional opportunities in higher education and community service.

What advice would you give to students currently looking into grad schools?

Pursuing an advanced degree is a big decision and a lot of work, but very rewarding. For me, it helped to take a pause between a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree so that I could find what I was most passionate about after experiencing more life and starting a career. Finding a program like the Master of Public Policy that is meant for working professionals can allow you to be in a better position financially and the opportunity to put the content and skills you are learning into practice in real time.
