What brought you to UNI?
I visited the campus once and I felt very welcome and I felt very satisfied with all of the academic areas of study available and all of the activities offered. It was really easy to make the choice to come to UNI because I didn’t have a particular college in mind, and I had family in the area.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
The experience that has been most rewarding for me while here at UNI was probably being awarded with the Women and Politics Scholarship during my Junior Year. I was going through a lot that year and to still be recognized from my hard work by my professors made me realize that it was all worth it!
How did you become interested in your major?
I did not come into UNI knowing what I wanted to major in. All I knew was that I wanted to meaningful work while also continually challenging myself intellectually. After some reflection I came to the conclusion that both political science and sociology would be the best way for me to achieve both of those goals.
What were some of your favorite classes?
Some of my favorite class in political science were Iowa Politics with Dr. Lamer, and Law and the Courts with Dr. Peters. In sociology I really enjoyed Childhood Inequalities with Dr. Kysar and Race, Ethnicity and Social Justice with Dr. Froyum.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
While at UNI a couple of activities I have participated in include the Fruehling research fellowship. I participated on a student panel for the new Gen. Ed. Certificate Institute. I also participated in the Expanding Your Horizons STEM Conference.
Post-graduation plans?
After i graduate UNI I will be moving to Des Moines and continuing my education at Drake University Law School.
How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
My majors at UNI have prepared me for my future in that I am now a better critical thinker, and I can better articulate my ideas. My majors have also definitely prepared my for all of the writing that will be expected of me in law school!
What advice would you give to high school seniors (and/or transfer students)?
In general, I would tell incoming UNI students to be open to taking classes that may change your perspective on certain issues and I would also tell them to make sure they get involved. Getting involved will enhance your college experience tremendously.
