Where are you completing your internship and what is your role there this summer? 

I completed my social work internship at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley. As a social work intern, I supported youth through daily programming, implemented a kindhearted kids program, implemented SEL activities in the art room, built relationships with youth and their families, and assisted staff with creating a safe and positive environment. 

What does your work look like day-to-day? Is there a project, responsibility or moment that has stood out so far? 

Each day included supervising youth, leading activities, supporting youth and staff, and running the Kindhearted Kids program. One of my favorite experiences was having a high school graduate job shadow me, and I possibly got him to change his major to social work! 

What have you learned through this experience about your field, the organization or yourself?

I've learned that social work is built on relationships, teamwork, and advocacy. This experience also helped me become more confident, less shy, and more open when it comes to future opportunities. 

How has UNI prepared you for this internship — through coursework, faculty support or other experiences? 

UNI prepared me through coursework in social work, child development, and ethics, while faculty encouraged me to apply what I learned with confidence in a professional setting. 

Has this experience shaped or clarified your plans after graduation? If so, how? 

Yes. This internship confirmed that I want to continue working with children and families and pursue a career where I can make a positive impact, whether it’s in a school, hospital, or non-profit organization setting. This experience has also made me want to get my Masters Degree! 

What would you tell another student who is wondering whether an internship is worth it? 

I would tell them absolutely do it! An internship helps you build more confidence, develop professional skills, and provides real-world experience that you can't get in the classroom. An internship can also help you get your foot in the door to even newer opportunities. I also would recommend that they do their internship at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley because of the welcoming atmosphere, supportive staff, and the many opportunities to gain hands-on experience working with youth and the community. 

Anything else you’d like to share? 

I am very grateful for my time spent as an intern at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley. The experience helped me grow both personally and professionally, and I know it will have a lasting impact on my future as a social worker.
