Turning movement science into a competitive edge.

Long before data analytics transformed baseball, Robin Lund was asking questions about how athletes move, why they succeed and how science could help them perform at a higher level.

From 2002 to 2019, Lund taught in the University of Northern Iowa's Department of Kinesiology, where he specialized in biomechanics, anatomy, statistics and research methods. His work focused on applying scientific principles to human movement, helping students understand not only how the body works but how research can improve performance in sport and everyday life.

Outside the classroom, Lund found another place to test those ideas.

As a volunteer strength and conditioning coach for UNI baseball under head coach Rick Heller, he began applying biomechanics and motion analysis to player development years before those approaches became commonplace in collegiate baseball. What started as an extension of his research eventually became a blueprint for modern pitching development.

When Heller accepted the head coaching position at the University of Iowa in 2013, Lund remained at UNI, continuing to teach while collaborating with the Hawkeyes. After concluding his 17-year faculty career in 2019, he joined Iowa's coaching staff full time.

His impact was immediate. Iowa developed into one of the nation's top pitching programs, producing conference championships, All-Americans and professional draft picks while consistently ranking among the Big Ten's best on the mound.

Lund's approach was never about following convention. In a 2022 Des Moines Register profile, Heller credited him with changing the way he thought about pitching, saying, "Robin's always been 10 years ahead of everybody else." The story described Lund as someone who challenged assumptions, blending research with coaching in ways that helped reshape the Hawkeyes' program and influenced coaches across college baseball.

That reputation eventually reached the professional ranks. In 2022, Lund was hired as assistant pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers, bringing the same research-driven approach he had refined as a professor and coach to Major League Baseball.

Long before data became part of baseball's everyday vocabulary, Robin Lund was exploring how biomechanics and research could unlock athletic performance in UNI classrooms and laboratories. His journey from professor to Major League Baseball coach reflects the power of curiosity, teaching and innovation — values that have long defined the University of Northern Iowa.
