Why did you choose UNI?
I chose UNI to be strategically located near schools in the area where I plan to live after graduation. This proximity allows me to gain valuable experience through work, volunteering, and teaching opportunities in local schools. Engaging with these schools provides me with a deeper understanding of the educational environment, which will be beneficial as I apply for positions in the area post-graduation.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
I have greatly appreciated the diverse range of political science courses offered at UNI, which have allowed me to identify my specific areas of interest within the field. Additionally, I consider myself fortunate to pursue two degrees within two outstanding programs at UNI, both of which offer a surplus of opportunities for academic and professional growth. The education department does a wonderful job of getting students in the classroom to help us learn in a more hands-on environment.
How did you become interested in your major?
My interest in politics began during my senior year of high school, sparked by a combination of a foreign policy course I was taking and my growing engagement with the 2020 presidential election. This experience led me to explore political science as a potential major. However, my path toward education unfolded a bit later. Initially, I considered careers in fields such as law enforcement, and I shadowed professionals in roles like major crimes. It wasn’t until I shadowed my 8th-grade history teacher that I truly found my calling. This experience was transformative, as I realized that I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful difference in others' lives. Teaching offers the perfect blend of my passion for history and my desire to shape and inspire the next generation.
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the major?
I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to deepen my understanding of a subject that impacts all of our lives. In my view, having a clear understanding of how government functions and the roles of elected officials is essential to being an informed and engaged citizen. In terms of education, I’ve found it incredibly rewarding to gain hands-on experience in classrooms from the start. The diverse range of classroom settings I’ve been exposed to has been valuable in helping me grow as an educator and refine my vision of the teacher I aspire to be.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I have been involved in volunteer work at local schools through coaching younger ages in volleyball and softball. During spring of 2023 I conducted research regarding my question “Opinions of book bans among religious and nonreligious people”. During fall of 2024, I have been in the classroom in Reinbeck and Marshalltown completing my student teaching.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
The professor who has had the most significant impact on me is Dr. Alexandra Kogl. When I transferred to UNI, I was feeling burnt out and uncertain about continuing my Political Science degree. However, after taking one of her courses, everything changed. Professor Kogl has a unique teaching style that is both engaging and welcoming to all students. She engages students not only in her deep knowledge of the subject matter but also in creating meaningful, transformative experiences for her students. Her approach reignited my passion for the field.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to start working in either a high school or middle school setting teaching social studies. I plan to hopefully return back to the classroom in the coming years and obtain my masters degree.
How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?
UNI has played a pivotal role in preparing me for my future by offering a wide range of diverse learning pathways. The ability to manage both of my majors and stay on track for graduation has been a significant advantage. Through my education and political science programs, I have had access to numerous opportunities to grow and enhance my skills. In my education major, I’ve been able to gain hands-on experience by working in various classrooms from the start, which has been valuable in shaping my teaching approach. In my political science major, I’ve taken a variety of courses that align with my interests and provided ample research opportunities, further strengthening my academic and professional development.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
Try it! Do the hard things, even when they feel uncomfortable. In the long run, stepping outside your comfort zone will not only make you stronger in your field but also help you grow as a person. I recognize that education and politics are two of the most crucial, yet often controversial, aspects of our world. Being in an educational environment that genuinely supports your success is essential in both of these fields. Understanding our government and political systems is vital for being an informed citizen, but the true reward comes from using that knowledge to inspire and educate the next generation.
