What brought you to UNI? How did you become interested in your major?
UNI's Political Communication degree! I knew I wanted to major in Communications or Political Science originally and having a degree that combined the two was a huge selling point for me.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
Getting closer with other students, professors, and staff members. Both of my majors are relatively small so I was able to get to know the people in my majors and the professors dedicated to my degrees well. I would not have added Public Administration as a second major without the encouragement of my Academic Advisor who believed that I would thrive in being involved in running government.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
Last summer I had the opportunity to work on a congressional campaign. After my summer internship ended, I continued organizing on campus registering voters, door-knocking, and performing other voter outreach before the midterm elections. I was also a member of the Panther Marching Band for two years as well as the Orchesis Dance Company.
Post-graduation plans?
I hope to work in state or local government somewhere in the Midwest.
What excites you about your plans?
The stability of working for the government. The beauty of bureaucracy partially lies in its predictability. Originally I planned to stay connected with working on campaigns which can be unpredictable (moving more often, campaigns dissolving suddenly, etc.) I'm excited to start somewhere and grow from there!
How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
Both of my degrees have prepared me for working on campaigns and within government while specializing in messaging. Language, whether making official language for a candidate or proposing city ordinances is extremely important.
What advice would you give to high school seniors?
Don't be intimidated by double-majoring. I was unsure if adding Public Administration was the best decision for me and it's now the direction I want to take my career. Academic Advisors are willing to work with you and make sure you graduate in a timely manner.
