Why did you choose UNI?
“I actually transferred to UNI as a junior after completing two years at Simpson College. A large contributor to why I transferred to UNI is because of their education program. Once I realized I wanted to be a teacher I knew that I needed to go to the place that was going to best equip me with the skills, knowledge, and experience to be an educator.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
I had a very untraditional experience at UNI, coming in as a junior during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic left me with minimal opportunities to experience many of the traditions and events that make UNI, UNI. Coming to a new school during a difficult time in everyone's lives was challenging, but the people I met along the way made it worthwhile.
How did you become interested in your major?
A large part of why I became interested in teaching is because of two of my high school teachers. Bethany (Broer) Starkweather and Geoff Buchanan, both UNI Graduates, were my two biggest inspirations during my time at South Hardin High School. Geoff instilled a passion for history and inquiry in me and Bethany showed me how rewarding teaching can be, especially when you take time to connect with and get to know your students. I would not be where I am today without those two educators.
What have been some of your favorite aspects of the major?
My favorite part of being an education major were the people. I had the opportunity to connect with both peers and professors across multiple disciplines.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I was a member of the Psi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi during my time at UNI. I was inducted into the honor society the fall of my senior year. I attended meetings when I was able to and formed a few friendships with other group members as well.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
I would say all of my professors were a positive influence on me during my time at UNI. There are a few in particular that I will truly value the time and dedication they committed to making me a better educator and life long learner. I’d like to extend my gratitude to every professor I worked with at UNI, but these ones in particular: Ashley Jorgensen, Leasha Henriksen, Ashleigh Kysar-Moon, Jesse Wilcox, and of course - Robert Nemeyer. and Ashley and Leasha, thank you for pushing me to become the best educator I can be. I have learned so much from both of you and will continue to use the lessons and pieces of advice you have given me for my entire life. Ashleigh Kysar-Moon, thank you for challenging me in the classroom in a way I had not been challenged before. Your Society and Mental Illness class was one of the best classes I have ever taken and a large part of that is due to your passion and excellence in your field and as a professor. Jesse, as someone who was a part of my education and both Simpson and UNI I cannot thank you enough for your endless support and encouragement. Bobby, thank you for being one of the most patient individuals. Thank you for not only putting up with me during your Diplomacy class but also for instilling a deeper love for history in me.
What are your post graduation plans?
Upon graduation I will be working as a Behavior Interventionist at Clear Creek Amana Schools in Tiffin, Iowa.
How has UNI/your major helped prepare you for these plans?
My major has done more than I could’ve ever asked for in preparing me for my future career. The CSBS and College of Education have some of the most outstanding programs at UNI. The proof is in the pudding when it comes to the amount of qualified and talented students who are alumni from UNI.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
Your professors are there to help, do not be afraid to ask them for it.
Do your readings, go to the writing center, lean on others around you. College is hard but there are resources to help you be successful, use them.
