What brought you to UNI?
Both of my parents are UNI alumni so I grew up as a Panther fan, coming to Cedar Falls for various sporting events. When it came time to make a college decision, I took a campus visit at UNI and immediately fell in love. I loved the way the campus community felt as people were smiling, holding doors open for each other, and everyone boasted about how amazing the faculty and staff were. I was set on my decision after that visit to UNI, and began here in the fall of 2019.
How did you become interested in your major?
In high school I was debating between a few options for majors, but had a strong interest in Interior Design. I decided to sign up for my high school's school-to-work program, a work-based learning opportunity in which I got to complete an internship in my desired field as a senior in high school! I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in the Des Moines area, which sold me on the major, and I've loved my experience in UNI's design program. Everything from the classes, to the faculty and the field trips have been nothing short of amazing.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
By far the people I've met and the connections and memories I've made here at UNI have been the most rewarding. Through my orgs, involvements, and classes, I've made so many valuable friendships and have gained mentors who have positively influenced my experience. I've also enjoyed making memories living on campus my first two years, attending UNI sporting events, shows at Gallagher-Bluedorn, and trying new restaurants in the Cedar Valley.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I work on-campus as a Peer Advisor in the Office of Academic Advising. I currently sit on the Advisor Selection and Development Committee for the University's Advising study, led by NACADA. I serve as the Vice President of Admissions for Panther Ambassadors, and have given campus tours to prospective students, their families, and other esteemed guests for four semesters. I am also involved at St. Stephen's, am a member of the Student Interior Designers of Northern Iowa (SIDNI) student org, and have previously been a Teaching Assistant and a Peer Mentor.
Post-graduation plans?
I am thrilled to join the team this summer at Jeid Studio in Des Moines, IA!
What excites you about your plans?
I am excited to learn more about the design world and have real-world experience with clients! I am also excited to be back in the Des Moines area, closer to family and friends. I also look forward to traveling and finding new hobbies outside of the college realm.
How did UNI prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
My design classes at UNI have given me the industry-related skills I will need to be successful in my future interior design career. On the other hand, my involvement and leadership positions have given me skills such as time-management (Google Calendar is my lifeline), communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
What advice would you give to incoming students?
On my campus tours, I always tell prospective students to choose the school they can see themselves thriving most at. I know this sounds pretty straightforward, but imagine where they will be most supported, have the most resources, and be able to be most successful. I've loved UNI for all these attributes, but also for how easy it is to get involved, hold leadership positions, and make my mark on the campus. Don't be afraid to ask questions and take advantage of every opportunity!
