What brought you to UNI?
After touring numerous schools in high school, I decided on UNI because it felt like home. Cedar Falls felt just big enough but not too big for a boy from a town of 500. I knew a few other people who were attending UNI, and I was looking forward to the support system that we would be able to provide for each other as we moved onto the next step in our lives.
How did you become interested in your major?
I have always enjoyed the academic environment. My parents and sisters taught me the importance of education from a young age, and that belief has stayed with me ever since. I had fantastic high school social studies teachers, who instilled in me a passion for the subject. Knowing that UNI has a great education program was a big factor in choosing my major, because I knew that I would be learning from the best.
What did you enjoy most about attending UNI?
My experience at UNI was filled with positive interactions. Classes were always engaging and enjoyable, my peers were very supportive and positive, and the faculty was top-notch. The support that UNI provides for its students greatly impacted my experience in a positive way.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I worked on campus as an intramural supervisor.
Post-graduation plans?
I will be teaching high school US History in North Carolina through Teach for America. I have not been assigned to a specific school district yet.
I am very excited to take the next step in my life while exploring new areas of the US. I have always wanted to live outside of Iowa for a while, and Teach for America provides me a good opportunity to follow that dream.
The education program here at UNI prepared me to be the best educator that I possibly can. I feel that I am prepared to be able to take over my own classroom and be a positive leader for all of my students.
What advice would you give to future Panthers?
Your experience in anything is based on your mindset around it. Make college a priority, and you will do great. Show up every day with a smile on your face, and others will soon be smiling back. I would highly recommend getting into the history/education department, as the faculty is very supportive and wishes nothing but the best for all students.
