Previous Experience/Background:
I spent the past eleven years as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science at Waldorf University. Throughout my career, I’ve remained deeply engaged with public history and statewide historical work, serving as a current or past board member for the State Historical Society of Iowa, Humanities Iowa, Preservation Iowa, and several local history organizations.
I was honored to participate in the inaugural Iowa Cultural Leadership Cohort through the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, a program focused on strengthening Iowa’s cultural and historical institutions. I’ve also had the opportunity to work in the field of public history with the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation. These experiences continue to shape my commitment to connecting academic research with community engagement.
What brought you to UNI?
The opportunity to join a department with strong leadership and a spirit of collaboration was a major draw for me to UNI. Even from a distance, I admired the vision and direction Dr. McNabb brought to the program in recent years. As I learned more about the dynamic work happening within the history department, it became increasingly clear that UNI is a place where I could contribute meaningfully to something impactful alongside colleagues I deeply respect.
What are your interests?
I am a rural and environmental historian of the American Midwest, with a particular focus on how human interaction with both natural and built environments shapes society over time. My work bridges scholarly research and public engagement, combining traditional academic writing with accessible, community-centered projects.
My forthcoming book, Retracing the Dragoon Trail in Iowa: Environmental Transformation along the Des Moines River, will be published by the trade imprint of Michigan State University Press in Spring 2026. I am also the creator and director of Notes on Iowa. This digital history initiative invites audiences to explore Iowa’s past through multimedia storytelling, including video, essays, and archival imagery.
Service is a core part of my professional mission. I currently serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the State Historical Society of Iowa, sit on the Board of Directors for Humanities Iowa, and collaborate with museums and nonprofit organizations across the state to promote historical education and preservation.
At the University of Northern Iowa, I teach courses in public history and American history. I am passionate about fostering student-centered learning environments that emphasize autonomy, curiosity, and voice. My teaching encourages students to refine their research skills while engaging critically with the past in both academic and public contexts.
