    Research Interests

    Dr. Johnson has published six books and numerous shorter pieces on topics in twentieth century American legal/constitutional history. He has also edited a two-volume encyclopedia on leading American court cases. His most recent book, a study of affirmative action in America, was published in 2009. He is a recipient of the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. A former UNI History Department Head, John is a serious golfer, cross-country skier and long-time fan of UNI women’s volleyball.

    Teaching Interests

    Professor Johnson has taught a variety of courses on U.S. History and interdisciplinary topics in the social sciences during his more than 40-year academic career. In recent years he has offered U.S. History Since 1960, U.S. Constitutional History, and a Liberal Arts Core course on critical thinking titled “Analysis of Contemporary Social Issues.”
