Research Interests

Dr. Martin’s primary research has focused on the conjunction of religion and society in the nineteenth and twentieth century United States.  His most recent book is Hero of the Heartland: Billy Sunday and the Transformation of American Society, 1862-1935 (2002).  He is a recipient of the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.  He enjoys spending his leisure time in conversation with friends and colleagues, reading, and being entertained by his guide dog Nick.

Teaching Interests

In addition to his administrative duties as Department Head, Professor Martin offers courses in the history of the American South, the late nineteenth and early twentieth century United States, American Society and Culture, and occasional seminars in U.S. History through Biography and Great American Disasters.
