Teaching Interests

Professor Martin offered courses in the history of the American South, the late nineteenth and early twentieth century United States, American Society and Culture, and occasional seminars in U.S. History through Biography and Great American Disasters.

Research Interests

Dr. Martin’s primary research had focused on the conjunction of religion and society in the nineteenth and twentieth century United States.  He published Hero of the Heartland: Billy Sunday and the Transformation of American Society, 1862-1935 in 2002.  He received the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.  While Dr. Martin retired at the end of Spring 2019, he still enjoys spending his leisure time in conversation with friends and colleagues.
