2017 Iowa Geography Bee

Geography Bee WinnerThe Department of Geography hosted the 2017 Iowa Geographic Bee. The state competition is organized by National Geographic and the Geographic Alliance of Iowa, and the winner earns a spot in the National Geographic Bee competition held by National Geographic.  The 103 student participants with their families and teachers came from across the entire state of Iowa, and ranged from 4th to 8th graders.  Competitors had to earn their spots in the state competition through local events held across the state. The 10 finalists showed amazing poise in the last competition round on the stage answering difficult questions prepared by the National Geographic Society! Grant Pedersen from Cardinal Middle High School won first place and will represent Iowa in the national finals in Washington DC.  Adler Hanson (Valley Elementary-NFV Middle) placed second and Jackson Barker (Franklin Middle School) placed third. This year UNI awarded scholarships to the top three finishers in recognition of their outstanding academic accomplishments at such an early age.
