Why did you choose UNI?
When visiting campus on a tour in high school, I instantly fell in love with the campus and community. It was very obvious to me that students at UNI felt happy with their decision and that the faculty care greatly.
What have you enjoyed the most about attending UNI?
It is honestly hard to decide. I am incredibly grateful to all of the amazing faculty, but cannot help but thank UNI for all of the opportunities I have received. I have been able to study abroad, TA, conduct undergraduate research, and more, all thanks to the opportunities available at UNI.
How did you become interested in your major?
I was taking many elective courses as a deciding major, and the contents of the sociology classes were really interesting and exciting to me. I loved what I was learning and decided I was best off in a career where I can be that passionate.
The things that I have learned from my sociology major have really opened my eyes to the world around me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my education and how it has inspired me to want a career where I can help to improve the world. Sociology classes have always had content that is really interesting and relevant to me.
How have you been involved outside of the classroom?
I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the CATs Club, where I got introduced to the Traditions Challenge and met so many amazing people.
In the Spring of 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to conduct undergraduate research under the guidance of Dr. Kysar-Moon. I studied artist wage disparities and was able to present my findings at the INSPIRE Conference.
I was able to study abroad in the fall of 2022 at the American College of Greece in Athens. It was a fantastic experience that developed my independence and exposure to other cultures, as well as introduced me once again to some really inspiring individuals.
What professors have been most influential through your time here at UNI?
Dr. Kysar-Moon saw a lot of potential in me and helped me to see it in myself. I was her Teaching Assistant for Statistics of Sociology in 2021 and she guided me through the Fruehling undergraduate research project in 2022. Her support helped me significantly in developing my skills and having the confidence to explore new opportunities.
What are your post graduation plans?
I am currently searching for work in the Des Moines area for after college. I want to be close to family, while still being able to explore my career.
How has UNI helped prepare you for these plans?
UNI has prepared me for these plans by giving me the tools I need to succeed beyond graduation. My education, experiences, and connections developed at UNI will always be valuable to me.
What advice would you give to students who are considering this major?
If you love learning about the social world around you, take this opportunity to major in it. Sociology is a versatile major that can prepare students for a variety of career paths and educate them about the world around us.
Anything else you’d like to add?
UNI and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences have inspired me to explore many different passions, and I am enthusiastic about the path they will take me on!
